Crystal & Anthony

A PBL First — Mother & Son Complete HiSET!

Two Generations of Graduates

2016 graduate Crystal went from living in a shelter with her young daughter to having steady employment, obtaining housing of her own, and getting a reliable car.

Anthony struggled through

remote learning and the frequent switching between virtual and in-person learning during Covid. He got his HEC in 2019 and now has a full-time job.

"I have more confidence about who I am and what I could become."

Flexibility allowed single mom to pass high school equivalency and get promoted to manager

Trish

Flexibility Made the Difference

Trish came to PBL hoping to finally get her high school diploma after more than 20 years out of school. Her son was attending Head Start at Whole Village so attending our class at the same location and at the same time was a perfect fit. Unfortunately, the demands of single parenting and full-time work soon caught up with her and she was unable to continue with class. Trish switched to our one-on-one tutoring program and quickly reached her goal. Trish says, “Because of the flexibility of the program at Pemi-Baker Literacy I was still able to finish.”

She has since been promoted to Assistant Manager at O’Reilly Auto Parts. Trish is grateful for how supportive and caring the teachers at PBL are. “They were there for me every step of the way. I look forward to working toward a degree in Business in the near future!”

— Thriving college student

“I am doing so much better than I ever thought I would and you guys were absolutely, 100% part of that. I can’t thank you enough for getting me through it all. I have been getting straight A's in college and finished my first term off with a 94% …. You will be getting an invitation to my college graduation when it comes!”

— The Proud Passer of the GED
     Aged 23

"Without you, I know I wouldn't have my GED nor would I have been able to pass the exam. Now that I have my GED, I have been talking with some online colleges to get into the medical field. Thank you!"

ESOL Student passes Licensed Nurse Assistant certification

Tann

A Dream Realized

Tann was newly married and had just arrived from Thailand. Although she learned some English growing up, she was still shy about speaking and expressing herself around fluent Americans. Her dream was to work in the medical field like her husband. After a year in our program she took a test to enter an LNA program, but she wasn’t quite ready. Tann continued to attend class at PBL and started meeting with a tutor to sharpen her speaking skills. When she took the test again she was accepted into the LNA program. She finished at the top of her class and started working at a nursing home.  Tann says, “I appreciate all of the support you have given me …. It feels so good to reach my goal and start my new career. I could not have done it without your help.”

Jenn

Our Scholarship Fund
Made It Possible

Jenn had an infant and a toddler at home and knew the time was right to finally get her diploma. Jenn utilized some of our scholarship fund to offset the costs of taking the HiSET test (the test is currently $125 for all five parts!) Jenn enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University for an Associate’s degree in Business Administration. She hopes to graduate in December of 2022 and open her own cleaning business!

Jessica celebrates with her family upon completing the HiSET preparation. Onward
and upward!

— Successful graduate

“Since getting my diploma, I’ve put myself through an accelerated LNA program and I now make a livable hourly wage which allows me to drive a reliable car for the first time in my life and I’m no longer receiving any public assistance! Pemi-Baker Literacy was the first step on the path to a new life for me.”

ESL student becomes a Head Start teacher

Carolina

From Student to Teacher

A native Argentinian, Carolina had been in the US for about 20 years. She was attending community college and found it was faster and easier to enroll in HiSET than trying to transfer her school transcripts from Argentina. She worked with a PBL tutor to brush up on her math and writing skills and successfully completed her HiSET and graduated with her Associates degree.

A few years later she became the Associate Teacher for HeadStart right here at Whole Village in Plymouth. She adores her job and all the wonderful children she gets to work with.

"You believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.  Now that I’ve passed, it feels so good to be able to contribute to my family’s financial needs once again.”

— Confident once again

Men can benefit from tutoring, too
